In een Q&A-sessie via social media over heel Europa
reageerde Päll als volgt op het betoog van de oud-voorzitter van de HRK, de
VSNU/HBO-raad van Duitsland: "I think it is high time to discuss
that. We know that current system on relying on EU funding and then
having a lot of free movers is not working. Governments have the
right to choose their HE policy. But it would be common sense not
to build strains on systems and discrimination for students."
"I am not fully convinced of the proposals in detail, but the
key element is that we should set a deadline of reaching an
agreement how to fund mobility in a way that is indeed fairer and
more sustainable for all of us. I agree we need commonly shared
solutions, but simple monetary transfer does not necessarily make
sense since that would mean that we could measure exactly which
country got the most out of educating someone. And that is too
nationalist in my view."
"Since we do hope that education will contribute to later lives
and wellbeing and working life of graduates and we do want them
also to move around. That is why I am favour of a European Mobility
Treaty that would centralise some funding or as an alternative,
would enable credits to be swapped or traded between HE systems or
institutions."
