A real Summer School

8 mei 2013 | This summer University College Roosevelt will increase its summer school. Added to the courses on excellent teaching with Harvard, there will be new programs in several disciplines. “The aim is to attract a wider range of participants than just university students.”

University College Roosevelt (formerly known as Roosevelt Academy) is expanding its summer course program, thereby establishing a real Summer School in Middelburg. In previous years dr. R. Vazquez, associate professor at UCR, organized the sociology course Slavery – The Past and Present of Social (Un)Justice, a topic very relevant to Middelburg’s own history.

The Excellent Learning through Excellent Teaching seminar, organized in cooperation with Harvard University’s Derek Bok Center, has also been organized at UCR for the past two summers and will be part of the curriculum this year as well. In the current academic year, UCR decided to substantively increase the amount of summer courses to eleven and with that mark the start of the UCR Summer School in Middelburg.

From groundwater hydrology to food politics

The increasing quantity of summer courses at UCR entails a broad spectrum of course topics offered in the upcoming edition of the summer school. Topics range from estuarine ecology to public speaking and from groundwater hydrology to food politics. Most of the courses are aimed at participants at advanced Bachelor level, some are open to everyone without regard to academic background.

Examples of the latter are the practical courses Drawing in the 21st Century and Master Class – Making the Documentary. “The aim is to attract a wider range of participants than just university students,” explains Dingeman Wolfert, one of the coordinators of this year’s summer school. Some of the courses are at Master/Ph.D. level. Fresh and Salt Groundwater in Deltaic Regions focuses on the threat saltwater intrusion poses to groundwater resources in deltaic and coastal regions.

This high level course, taught by prof. dr. Ruud Schotting (Full Professor at Utrecht University) and prof. dr. ir. Hans van Duijn (Rector Magnificus at the Technical University of Eindhoven), has already attracted multiple graduate and Ph.D. students as well as specialists from the private sector.
