Medische integratie van start

Health Science & Technology (HST), een samenwerkingsverband van TUD, Leiden/LUMC en Erasmus/EMC, richt zich de integratie van de technologische, biologische en medische disciplines. Deze combinatie kan tot baanbrekende vindingen leiden op het gebied van nieuwe diagnostica en therapieën en uiteindelijk bijdragen aan een betere gezondheidszorg en economische groei op dit terrein. James Muller, hoofd van het Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology, bekend vanwege zijn aandeel in de Nobelprijs voor de Vrede van 1985, en Dinko Valerio, oprichter van Crucell en Galapagos Genomics, komen daarom naar het eerste HST congres op 23 april in Delft.
Het eerste HST congres biedt de mogelijkheid aan wetenschappers, medici, technologen en beleidsmakers om interesses uit te wisselen, kansen voor samenwerking te identificeren en contacten met industriële partners te leggen. Daarnaast zullen de doelstellingen van HST, een recent ingediend HST onderzoeksvoorstel ‘Hart in 3D’ en een nieuwe HST onderzoeksfonds gepresenteerd worden.

Science within the HST context is primarily concerned with understanding the mechanisms of disease at either a fundamental or phenomenological level. Technology is concerned with using this knowledge to ‘engineer’ solutions to the problems associated with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of diseases. The HST research partnership is a way to bring science and technology together to meet the medical needs, financial constraints, and economic aspirations of the Netherlands today and to create alternatives for tomorrow.

Twelve parallelsessions, each being a brief workshop, are planned covering the full spectrum of HST research. Each session will feature an open discussion among HST researchers to exchange information and to further shape and organize the HST research collaboration. An additional session is planned for industry and local/regional administration partners. Results of the parallel session are presented in a postermarket immediately after.

In a plenary closing session, the HST-KLEIN call will be presented by the dean of Erasmus MC, prof.dr. Huib Pols. HST- klein is a new faculty grant for HST research projects, created by the Deans involved in HST.
