Kunstpraktijk in de samenleving

Het lectoraat “Kunstpraktijk in de Samenleving” onderzoekt de invloed van maatschappelijke veranderingen (technologische, wetenschappelijke, economische, (cultuur)politieke, …) op artistieke praktijken en tracht deze te beschrijven en te verklaren. Onder meer gestuurd door de inzichten van de kritische theorie tast het lectoraat de mogelijkheden af van een ideologische (her)positionering van de kunsten in de maatschappij.

Over de lector
Dr. Pascal Gielen
(1970) is professionally based at the University of Groningen as sociologist of arts and has the chair ‘Arts in Society’ at the Fontys College for the Arts in Tilburg. Books written by Gielen are ‘Aesthetics for Decision Makers’ (2001), ‘Art in Networks’ (2003) and as co-author with Rudi Laermans ‘An Environment for Contemporary Art’ (2004) and ‘Cultural Good’ (2005). Gielens recent monographs are ‘The Unattainable Inside of the Past’ (2007) and ‘The Art Institution’ (2007). At this moment he is preparing the book ‘Field Works’ an empirical researche-based critical reading of the work of Pierre Bourdieu. Gielen is doing research about the effects of globalization on the contemporary visual arts. He developed the international master ‘Arts in Society’ at the University of Groningen and he is curator of the Biennial of Brussels 2008 for the sub-theme ‘(G)Localization of the Arts in Society’.
