HO-beleid winnaar in India

Premier Singh is zeer content met het verdrag dat hij met de USA heeft kunnen sluiten op het gebied van de civiele benutting en ontwikkeling van nucleaire kennis en energie. ‘It could yield handsome results.’ Hij bepleit daarom een “very significant increase in the share of nuclear power, both through domestic and imported technology.”

Speerpunt in het kennisbeleid van India moet een doorgaande impuls zijn voor het hoger onderwijs. Deze bouwt voort op het beleid van de voorbije jaren: ‘a massive expansion in higher education by opening eight new Indian Institutes of Technology, seven new Indian Institutes of Management, five new Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research, 30 new Central Universities, 20 new Indian Institutes of Information Technology, and 374 new colleges in educationally deprived districts.’

In een interview met ScienceGuide zet de belangrijkse inspirator van de ambities van India als kennisnatie, de wetenschapper en voormalig staatshoofd Abdul Kalam, uiteen hoe hij de toekomst van India ziet en wat hij in de loop van zijn leven gedaan heeft om die ambitie te ontwikkelen en waar te maken. “Ik was het eerste kind uit ons dorpje dat naar een college ging. Nu zijn op het eiland twee flinke highschools actief en kunnen ze allemaal doorleren!”
