The main aim of The Journal of Tourism and Peace Research is toprovide a peer-reviewed forum for the study and discussion oftourism and peace issues in tourism and tourism-related areas ofleisure, recreation and hospitality studies. The realities of the21st Century, including globalization, the EU enlargement, immigration, terrorism, home-grown terror, made and naturalcatastrophes, conflicts, stereotypes, perceptions, and risingpoverty, necessitate a closer look at the role of tourism. TheJournal of Tourism and Peace Research is an international journalthat encompasses all aspects of tourism and leisure oriented topeace, cooperation and conflict solutions. Tourism and Peace isbroad in scope and deals with many factors relating to peace, suchas appropriate planning, international cooperation, peace throughtourism, tourism for peace, tourism in conflict-ridden areas, avoiding potential negative impacts of tourism and mitigatingexisting ones, tourism and human rights, peace museums, tourism andattitude change, inappropriate tourism behavior, inappropriateindustry behavior, tourism and peace initiatives and examples ofgood practice through tourism, tourism and borders – physical andperceptual, tourism and cross cultural behavior and understanding, tourism encounters, political tourism, and ethical tourism.

The major concerns of the journal revolve around the myths, realities and potential of tourism as an agent of peace. Criticalquestions concerning the extent to which tourism can contribute tothe multifaceted nature of peace, and help it to function in anethical manner can guide our research.

Tribe (2008: 245) reminds us that “tourism ought to be a morecritical business”. The Journal of Tourism and Peace Research hopesto engage peace and tourism researchers with critical theory, usingits insights and guidance to answer related critical questions. Inthe tourism and peace context, aspects of critical theory can helpus to understand what tourism is and what it is not, what it can doand what it cannot.  The business of tourism is imbued withconflicting dynamics of power, struggle, empowerment, equality, hegemony, imperialism, inequality, exclusion, ideology, oppression, rejection, emancipation, and others. As “critical theorydeliberately seeks to engage with normative questions of values anddesired ends” (Tribe: 247), concepts such as these and otherdomains of critical theory can help us to further our understandingof the tourism environment with the objective of finding ways ofusing tourism to the benefit of peace.

The Journal of Tourism and Peace Research welcomes submissionsfrom scholars in all parts of the world. Submitted research papersshould normally be 4000-7000 words in length, and shoulddemonstrate original and substantive contributions to scientificknowledge. Shorter articles in the form of Research Notes,Commentaries, Reports, and Reviews may also be submitted. TheJournal of Tourism and Peace Research will be published twice ayear, and will include themed collections as well as individualpapers. The Journal of Tourism and Peace Research is committed tomaintaining a high standard of quality and excellence throughrigorous review procedures. In addition to tourism, it is ofrelevance to a number of disciplines, including sociology, anthropology, geography, environmental studies, peace and conflictstudies, urban planning and hospitality management.
