Berlusconi gaat in de wetenschap

So…you are apresident too?”

‘Late last month, Berlusconiinvited his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to become thefirst lecturer at an institution that the Italian leader intends tobuild near Milan. Putin readily accepted the offer, according tothe Italian prime minister.

The institution would be called l’Universita del Pensiero Liberaleand Berlusconi looks set to try to lure a number of other currentand former world leaders to join as lecturers. Bill Clinton, TonyBlair and Mikhail Gorbachev have all been mentioned in Italy inrelation to the scheme.

But the choice of Putin to spearhead the project has raisedeyebrows – many would argue that the former KGB head has donelittle to enhance “liberalism” in his own country. The attempt towoo Putin has also led commentators to suggest sarcastically thatBerlusconi could invite other advocates of “liberalism” such asBelarus’ leader Alexander Lukashenko.’

Anna Bull, professor in Italian and European studies aan deUniversity of Bath zegt bijvoorbeeld tegen THE: “Berlusconi’s ideais to set up an institution able to challenge the dominance ofLeftist thought in Italy and help shape and train the futurepolitical and ruling class of the country.”

Het zou bij de nieuwe instelling gaan om “a private campus-styleuniversity with four faculties: economy and commerce; law;political science; and communications. It will not impact directlyon the state university system, but it may accelerate a trendtowards the private sector in providing secondary and highereducation.”
