Obama wil toch naar Mars

29 juni 2010 | In 2025 moeten mensen geland zijn op een asteroide en in de jaren na 2030 op Mars. Obama’s nieuwe ‘space policy’ strategie geeft data, richtlijnen en benchmarks voor een brede benadering van activiteiten in de ruimte. Grote nadruk krijgt nu samenwerking van de USA met anderen, waarbij veel breder gekeken wordt dan pure R&D-thema's.
“We are proposing improved observation of the earth, to gain newinsights into our environment and our planet. We set ambitiousgoals for NASA: ramping up robotic and human space exploration,with our sights set on Mars and beyond.”
Het document van het Witte Huis zegt onder meer:”Departments and agencies shall identify potential areas forinternational cooperation that may include, but are not limited to:space science; space exploration, including human space flightactivities; space nuclear power to support space science andexploration; space transportation; space surveillance for debrismonitoring and awareness; missile warning; Earth science andobservation; environmental monitoring; satellite communications;GNSS; geospatial information products and services; disastermitigation and relief; search and rescue; use of space for maritimedomain awareness; and long-term preservation of the spaceenvironment for human activity and use.”
Dit wordt bovendien onderdeel van het buitenlands beleid van deUSA. Hillary Clinton en haar opvolgers zullen er actief mee aan deslag moeten blijkt uit het stuk: “The Secretary of State, afterconsultation with the heads of appropriate departments andagencies, shall carry out diplomatic and public diplomacy effortsto strengthen understanding of, and support for, U.S.national spacepolicies and programs and to encourage the foreign use of U.S.spacecapabilities, systems, and services.”
