Delft brandpunt wetenschapsnieuws

Nieuws | de redactie
1 maart 2012 | Grote "buzz" en een "impressive coup in solid-state physics." "I think this is the most promising-looking experiment yet." "He struck gold."

Nature schrijft bijvoorbeeld bijna hijgend: “Getting intonanoscience pioneer Leo Kouwenhoven’s talk at the AmericanPhysical Society’s March meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, todaywas like trying to board a subway train at rush hour.” En men wasook echt onder de indruk. ‘Kouwenhoven didn’t disappoint. “Have weseen Majorana fermions? I’d say it’s a cautious yes,” he concludedat the end of a data-heavy presentation.’

‘Although other groups have previouslyreported circumstantial evidence for the appearance of Majoranafermions in solid materials, Jay Sau, a physicist at HarvardUniversity in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who attended Kouwenhoven’stalk, says that this is a direct measurement. “I think this is themost promising-looking experiment yet,” he says. “It would be hardto argue that it’s not Majorana fermions.”

“For example, the neutralino, a hypothetical supersymmetric particle that couldaccount for some or all of the Universe’s dark matter, is thoughtto be a Majorana fermion.”
