Harvard en MIT zijn met vergelijkbare initiatieven bezig. Zijhebben edX opgericht. De eerste cursus daarvan trok al 120.000studenten wereldwijd. De inspiratiebron hiervan is het pionierswerkvan het Open Course Ware Consortium, dat vanuit MIT is opgezet ennu voorgezeten wordt door

Stanford-president John Hennessy zegt over dezerevolutie: “There’s a tsunami coming.” Een van zijn hoogleraren dietot de oprichters van Coursera gerkend wordt, zegt het nog watharder: “The tsunami is coming whether we like it or not. You canbe crushed or you can surf and it is better to surf.”
Uit de eerste cijfers blijkt dat 60 tot 67% van de studenten aandeze ‘MOOC’ – massive open online courses – van buiten de USAkomen. Opvallend veel deelnemers zijn LLL-studenten die hunopleidingen willen opwaarderen in het kader van hunloopbaanontwikkeling. Daarnaast benutten studenten dit om minorente doen die hun eigen HO-instelling niet kan bieden.
