Van Vught zegt in zijn rede bij de opening van het Maastrichtseacademisch jaar over de conclusies die ons land moet trekken ondermeer:
Wat doen we met de middelen?
“If we want to keep up with international competition we tooneed to have a fresh, objective look at the Dutch system of highereducation and research as a whole. Do we have the best set ofinstitutional profiles in the context of the global competition fortalent and knowledge? Do we have the best range of profiles inorder to further develop our knowledge economy?”
“Do we have the best possible spread and critical mass ofresearch units and infrastructures? Do we want to create one or twouniversities of high international standing while stimulating theremaining universities to develop other profiles? Are we spendingour resources as well as we can?”
Het systeem als geheel tegen het licht
“Do we provide sufficiently diverse teaching programs to train agrowing diversity of learners? Do we attract the appropriate leveland volume of international talent? Are our knowledge applicationprocesses sufficiently effective and efficient?”
“These and similar questions need to be addressed not only atthe level of higher education institutions, but in terms of theoverall higher education and research system as well. Now that inthe Netherlands we have taken the step of designing and discussinginstitutional profiles, we should be bold enough to take the nextstep as well: to analyse our system as a whole.”
