Financing the Future
As the crisis expands, the topic of financing higher education remains ‘hot’ in the minds of decision makers fixed on cutting down government budgets. Finland’s recent proposal to introduce tuition fees for foreign students is a case in point. In the UK there is a fundamental discussion on the calculations of costs and benefits.
As there is absolutely no unity in European tuition fees, it is interesting to compare the different systems in the EU’s Member States. The European Student Union (ESU) is offering exactly that comparison during a conference on ‘Financing the Students’ Future’ on the 29th of January.
Discussing the challenges of financing
The project ‘Financing the Students’ Future’ (FINST) is one of ESU’s key projects, focusing on financing and in particular on students’ view on financing of higher education in European countries. For the past two years ESU has been gathering different data, discussing the challenges of financing with students all over Europe and different stakeholders. ESU also produced different articles and future funding scenario’s.
The Final conference will outline the main outcomes of the FINST project. Following the presentations, there will be an information session about the funding of Higher education on European level and a discussion about the future of funding, where ESU will try to find the answer to the question what should be the future funding policies.
