Fresco kandidaat voor Europa
“In our view Louise Fresco would be an ideal President of the ERC, as she is working at the cutting edge of basic research but is also fully aware of the value of basic research in dealing with big societal challenges, both those we are dealing with today and those that are yet unknown and will provide challenges in the future. She is an outspoken and strong spokesperson for the value of basic research,” schrijven president Clevers en zijn collega’s aan het benoemingscomité van de ERC.
Senior top-wetenschapper
De voor Fresco geambieerde baan is binnen Europa fors aan gewicht gegroeid. Recent heeft de Commissie-Barroso de rol van de ERC-president verder opgewaardeerd. “The Commission’s proposals for the specific programme implementing Horizon 2020 establish the function of an ERC President, to be chosen from among senior and internationally-respected scientists. The ERC President will reside in Brussels for the duration of the appointment and devote most of their time to ERC activities. The ERC President shall be appointed by the Commission for a term of office limited to four years, renewable once.”
Zou Fresco de functie weten te winnen, dan is er iets bijzonders aan de hand. Zij zou als tweede vrouw de rol van ERC-voorzitter op zich nemen, na de nu vertrekkende Helga Nowotny.
“Original and constructive”
Dittrich, Clevers en Engelen schrijven aan het comité onder leiding van Lord Sainsbury dat Fresco de juiste combinatie van academische excellentie en onderzoekservaring paart aan een grote maatschappelijke en bestuurlijke power en betrokkenheid. “The fact that she is a highly respected and appreciated researcher and scholar with a broad view is also illustrated by the various advisory functions in which she has served over the years. In numerous positions she has shown the capacity for providing recommendations and counsel that are both original, insightful and constructive.”
“Such functions range from being an advisor to the Dutch government on socio- economic policy, science and sustainability, to being on the supervisory board of the Rabobank, one of the world’s largest banks in the agricultural sector and membership of the advisory council for the The Hague Institute for Global Justice.”
Klimaatklus als aanbeveling
De wetenschappelijke autoriteit van Fresco konden zij onderstrepen in hun voordracht door onder meer te wijzen op haar sleutelrol – samen met Robbert Dijkgraaf – bij de revisie van het klimaatonderzoek bij de UNO. “She is highly respected as a researcher. Not only is she a very productive academic (with over 100 articles and several books), but her work has also has had an enormous international impact, both in the scientific world and in broader society.”
“By nature, her scholarship has a strong interdisciplinary focus, bridging the natural and social sciences. Her international visibility is also illustrated by the fact that in 2010 she was appointed to the international scientific team of the InterAcademy Panel that reviewed the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPC), as requested by the UN.”
Dat Louise Fresco een nieuwe functie zou (willen) krijgen was al enige tijd merkbaar. Haar naam werd vorig najaar nadrukkelijk genoemd als de topkandidaat voor de opvolging van Yvonne van Rooy als collegevoorzitter van de UU. Die procedure raakte echter in een opvallende vertraging en pas na enige tijd werd AKZO-topvrouw Marjan Oudeman benoemd in Utrecht. Daarmee was de weg vrij om Fresco op het Europese niveau te ‘lanceren’, dat erg goed aansluit bij haar eerdere internationale functies.
