Het nieuwste rapport over de mensenrechten in Wit Rusland vanuit de VN “describes positive developments where they were discernible. In his assessment, human rights remain systemically and systematically restricted, especially in the case of the freedoms of association, of assembly, and of expression and opinion, as well as the guarantees of due process and fair trial.”
Steun van Iran en Zimbabwe
Wat studentenleiders en andere ‘activo’s in de civil society overkomt onder het regime van Loekasjenko vat de rapporteur even bondig als aangrijpend samen. “Of particular concern is the continuing imprisonment of political opponents, human rights defenders and activists based on spurious criminal charges and unfair procedures, aggravated by allegations of torture and ill-treatment while in custody, as part of physical and psychological pressure aimed at “breaking” them into admission of guilt.”
Bij de behandeling van het rapport laat Loekasjenko zich in de VN-Mensenrechtencommissie verdedigen door onder meer Iran, Cuba, Zimbabwe, Rusland, China, Venezuela en Bahrein. “The report does not result from the cooperation with the government of Belarus,” en is daarom eenzijdig en onwaar, zo meldt bijvoorbeeld de vertegenwoordiger van president Poetin.
