Nederland hoogvlakte in kennis
VSNU-voorzitter Karl Dittrich telt natuurlijk zijn zegeningen. “Dertien Nederlandse universiteiten staan in de top 250 van de wereld, waarvan acht in de top 100. Als je bedenkt dat er wereldwijd meer dan 30.000 universiteiten zijn dan behoren al onze instellingen in deze ranking tot de beste 1% van de wereld, daar ben ik trots op.”
Het beeld van de THE-ranking bevestigt een gedurige trend in de serieus te nemen rankings op wereldschaal. Die van CHE in Duitsland, de Shanghai Jiao Tong ranking en die van het Leidse CWTS laten zien, dat het Nederlands WO als systeem een soort hoogvlakte vormt. Andere sterke kennisnaties hebben soms in de top 100 instellingen op grote hoogte staan, maar kennen in hun HO-bestel ook vele honderden zwakkere tot zeer zwakke broeders.
Opmars van Maastricht
De opmars van de Universiteit Maastricht past in het patroon dat al eerder was gesignaleerd. Bij de ‘jonge universiteiten’ die de laatste 50 jaar zijn opgericht behoort de Limburgse instelling al enige tijd tot de wereldtop. Zij steeg recent van 19 naar 6.
“The overall World University Rankings continue to highlight the strength of the Dutch higher education system, with 12 of its research universities making the world top 200,” zegt de chef van THE, Phil Baty. “But this table highlights one truly remarkable performer: Maastricht University. Founded as recently as 1976, it has jumped dramatically into the 100 Under 50 top 10 – reflecting its steady rise up the traditional rankings, too. It is another sign of Dutch higher education’s strength in depth.”
Bestel in topregionen
Frans van Vught van onder meer U-Map en U-Multirank, de Europese meer-dimensionele rankingsopzet die in de maak is, analyseerde het patroon van ons land in relatie tot de wereldschaal van HO-kwaliteit recent en kwam tot de volgende conclusie. “The Dutch university system may be judged as one of the best in the world. All Dutch universities (with the exception of the Open University which has a special position in the system) are to be found among the world’s top 500 universities. If we accept for the moment the choices of indicators and methods used by the Shanghai and THE rankings, we can, based on their data, make a ranking of the ‘best’ university systems in the world.”
“The Dutch university system indeed is an academic mountain plateau with some smaller peaks that, however, do not reach the heights of the giant summits of some universities in the US and UK. A recent international report by Universitas 21 on the performance of higher education systems worldwide places the Dutch system at a very respectable 9th position in a ranking of 48 higher education systems. Better systems are found only in the US and Canada, Scandinavia, Switzerland and Australia.”
“However, if you take a closer look at this study, it appears that the Dutch universities do not reach this position because their international enrolment or resource levels are so high but because of the large volume of academic output and particularly because our regulatory environment is seen as attractive. Compared to other systems, the Dutch higher education system is seen as having a favourable policy context, in particular because of the significant institutional autonomy.”
