President Lessig
Lessig schreef onlangs, dat de rijkdom en levensstijl van de Clintons op basis van hun betaalde optredens en stichtingen voor allerlei goede doelen en hun persoonlijke exposure een pijnlijk aspect van de politieke cultuur vormt, dat Hillary Clinton als presidentskandidaat niet past. Zelfs Reagan vond hij nog netter.
“It is not an horrendous burden to live life modestly (for a billionaire); that life is still miles above the life of ordinary Americans. And it is not too much to ask that the public work of Senators or Secretaries of State not be clouded by the questions that have been raised about an economy of influence populated by some of the worst rogue leaders in the world.”
“Yes, Ronald Reagan earned millions from speeches after he was President. But his wife was not a high government official. And yes, Jimmy Carter also built a Foundation after serving as President. But the donors to that foundation are not a who’s who of questionable world leaders. And when Carter gets paid to give a speech, his ordinary practice is to donate that money to his foundation.”
Equal access to the ballot box
Nu overweegt de jurist zelf een gooi te doen naar het hoogste ambt in Washington. Als een staatsrechtprof van de universiteit in Chicago dat met succes kan en ook nog krachtig herkozen word en kan, dan toch ook een van Harvard? Daarom maakt hij nu het volgende bekend: “Lessig is exploring a run as a “referendum President” to get Congress to pass the Citizen Equality Act – legislation that would ensure equal access to the ballot box, end partisan gerrymandering, and establish a voucher system for elections that would remove the power of cronies and special interests and shift that influence to the American people.
Zijn beste getuige noemt hij niemand minder dan Donald Trump. Deze zei het zelf in het debat van de GOP-kanididaten: “I will tell you that our system is broken. I give to many people. I give to everybody, when they call I give, and you know what? When I need something from them, two years, three years later, I call, they are there for me.”
Welnu, daar zit de crux dus, benadrukt Lessig. “While over 80 percent of Americans are deeply concerned about the corrupting influence of money in politics, Trump’s flip remarks demonstrate how resigned the public has become to accept our quid pro quo political system.”
“The reason I’ve been driven to this is the constant ’emperor wears no clothes’ feeling about this election. We need a plan for unrigging the system first, and none of them have given us that plan. Unless you fix the way we fund campaigns, we’re not going to take on the largest funder of congressional campaigns in America.”
Hate the other side
In een rede onlangs gaf hij de diepere drijfveren aan waarom hij blijkbaar nu deze stap overweegt. “We live in the age of polarized culture. We try, and take it for advantage that we are just supposed to identify who we are, and who they are. And we’re supposed to rally us against them.
We do that in politics. You know, the standard way in which Republicans and Democrats deal with each other is to rally their side against the hate of the other side. We do that on the media. You know, the way that you succeed in television is to be FOX or MSNBC, not the kind of ‘lets be balanced in the middle’ CNN. No! You’ve got to rally your base to hate the other side. And this is the way in which we engage in the business model of these organizations. It’s all directed to people to rallying hate.”
Science suffers
Deze manier van denken was ook merkbaar in de zorgen vanuit de ‘VSNU’ van de USA in ons recente interview met hun beleid-chef Tobin Smith. “De financiële crisis is samen gegaan met een verlammende polarisatie in vooral het Congres, Huis en Senaat. Men is niet in staat meer een overheidsbegroting door te voeren. Dat leidt dan tot zulke ‘shutdowns’ en ‘sequestrations’, oftewel ruwe – 10% kortingen op alles als noodgrepen. ‘Stability is lost as a political virtue.”
Er is meer dan politiek onvermogen. Het is welbewuste onwil, zegt Smith, “an unwillingness to come to agreement.” Gematigde, pragmatische politici en bestuurders zijn nog bereid te luisteren naar de visie van anderen, ook vanuit de wetenschap, maar vleugel-fanaten niet. “I will hold fast to my views”, geldt bij hen als pluspunt naar de achterban, ook als dat verder improductief is.
“Science suffers. Wetenschap wordt bovendien zelf een issue waarover vleugels zich kunnen profileren en de polarisatie aanwakkeren. Dat zien we rond thema’s stamcelonderzoek, klimaatverandering en het curriculum voor scholen bij de evolutieleer. Kennis wordt zo een ‘wedge issue’, dat je kunt gebruiken om je af te zetten van andere opvattingen.”
