Opportunity and equality under fire

Nieuws | de redactie
27 oktober 2015 | The OECD starts a new center to analyse and reduce inequalities in opportunity and wealth. It will review key trends in different dimensions of inequality and poverty with special chapters addressing different policy-relevant issues for the global inequality debate to strengthen ‘inclusieve growth’.

The OECD has long been the world’s leading source of information and analysis of trends in inequality in developed countries. To make its analysis and recommendations ever more useful to policy makers, as part of the All on Board for Inclusive Growth Initiative, it is launching a Centre for Opportunity and Equality.

The Centre for Opportunity and Equality will prepare a regular publication, combining a review of key trends in different dimensions of inequality and poverty with special chapters addressing different policy-relevant issues for the global inequality debate. It will improve metrics and the statistical basis for comparative analysis. The Centre will draw on expertise from across the organisation to help countries address the key challenges posed by the rise in inequalities.

Different dimensions of inequality

As part of the Inclusive Growth Initiative, the centre will organise a series of seminars with high-level speakers – policy makers, academics and social organisations – to discuss key policy issues and initiatives addressing different dimensions of inequality. It will also partner with other research centres and organisations to organise joint events.

The Centre for Opportunity and Equality will host visiting researchers as well as experts from research centres and public administrations to contribute to and learn from the OECD work on opportunity and equality. It will also interact with the Inclusive Growth Advisory Group of international experts on inequalities and inclusive growth.

The launching event will be moderated with two panel discussions to address why inequalities are a challenge to our society and a concluding session to underscore the need for inclusive growth. There will be an open discussion with panellists, and in the final session, participants will be invited to provide their ideas on priority areas for the work of the Centre.
