Clinton en Bush samen aan de slag

21 februari 2011 | De University of Arizona in Tucson gaat iets doen aan de toon en kwaliteit van het publiek debat in de USA. Dit naar aanleiding van de aanslag op haar plaatsgenoot, het Congreslid Gabrielle Giffords. Het National Institute for Civil Discourse zal twee oud-presidenten kennen als voortrekkers: Bill Clinton en George Bush sr.

Directeur Brint Milward zegt dat het nieuwe instituut zich zalfocussen op “political disagreements from the grass roots all theway to the top. In a great democracy, it’s important for people tohold fast to principles, but at the same time to understand wherethey might be able to compromise.” De toespraak van president Obamaop de universiteit -daags na de aanslag- was een belangrijke impulshiervoor, vertelt hij in de New York Times.

Obama drong er bij zijn landgenoten op aan “[to] remindourselves of all the ways that our hopes and dreams are boundtogether. At a time when our discourse has become so sharplypolarized, at a time when we are far too eager to lay the blame forall that ails the world at the feet of those who think differentlythan we do it’s important for us to pause for a moment and makesure that we are talking with each other in a way that heals, not away that wounds.” Iets waar niet alleen Amerikanen veel aan zoudenkunnen hebben…

Doelen van het instituut zijn onder meer het definieren van”best practices and corrosive practices. How do we nurturerobustness on one hand and not in any way chill speech, and keep itin bounds that are not destructive to democracy? Will it change thenature of dialogue? That will be a tall order.”

Een reeks hooggeplaatste Amerikanen van zeer verschillendepolitieke herkomst heeft al toegezegd mee te doen.” Tom Daschle,the former Democratic majority leader and senator from SouthDakota, and former Justice Sandra Day O’Connor will be honoraryco-chairmen of the institute,” meldt Milward aan de NYTimes. Hijdeelte deze functie met niemand minder dan de oud-presidenten BillClinton en Goerge Bush sr.

“Members of the board will include former Secretary of StateMadeleine K. Albright; former Representative Jim Kolbe of Arizona;Kenneth M. Duberstein, an adviser to President Ronald Reagan; GretaVan Susteren, the Fox News anchor; and Trey Grayson, the directorof Harvard University’s Institute of Politics.”
