2 oktober 2009 | Stephen Hawking moet nu hij 67 wordt de Lucasian leerstoel in Cambridge verlaten. Maar hij krijgt meteen een nieuwe baan. " I will carry on with my scientific work. I'm currently working on the quantum creation of the universe."
In een verklaring over zijn vertrek van de leerstoel die ooitsir Isaac Newton bekleedde, zegt Hawking: “The first thing I shouldsay, is that I’m not retiring. Under Cambridge Universityregulations, I will no longer be the Lucasian Professor, but I willhave a new post as a Director of Research at Cambridge.
I will carry on with my scientific work, and my efforts toexplain it to other people. I’m currently working on the quantumcreation of the universe, and the rapid inflation in size thatfollowed.
Despite having been unfortunate enough to get motor neuronedisease at the age of 21, I have had a full and satisfying life. Ihave three wonderful children, and have been able to add to ourunderstanding of the universe.
It has been a glorious time to be alive, and doing research intheoretical physics. Our picture of the universe, has changed agreat deal in the last 40 years, and I’m happy if I have made asmall contribution.
I want to share my excitement and enthusiasm. There’s nothinglike the Eureka moment, of discovering something that no-one knewbefore. I won’t compare it to sex, but it lasts longer.”
In een week waarin in ons land overeenstemming over eengeleidelijke toegroei naar AOW met 67 niet mogelijk leek, kan menbewondering hebben voor een wetenschapper die met zulke zwarefysieke handicaps onverdroten en met onverminderd enthousiasme zijntalent, werkkracht en inspiratie met de medemens wil blijvendelen.
